But Sarai was barren; she had no child (Genesis 11:30).
"And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the
LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken. For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a
son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. And Abraham
called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him,
Isaac.... And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will
laugh with me. And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah
should have given children suck? for I have born him a son in his old
age." (Genesis 21:1-3, 6-7).
Abraham and Sarah had tried all, even surrogacy, and it
failed. Perhaps they were pouring all their love on Lot as a son, but he soon
greedily chose the 'better' part of the land and moved away...they had given up
hope and had concluded that all they had would be inherited by Ishmael or a
servant....
Then came an angelic visitation, which they could have
easily missed if they did not maintain a good attitude even when all hope
seemed lost...then Sarah laughed....then she lied about laughing....but the
Lord had mercy and gave an appointed time...
I have always marveled at the faith Abraham and Sarah
demonstrated when they had the sexual relations that resulted in Isaac's conception.
All hope was supposedly lost; why try again?
We can liken what Abraham and Sarah did to the words of
Peter in Luke 5:5 - 'Master, we have toiled all the night and have taken
nothing: NEVERTHELESS AT THY WORD I will let down the net... Peter had a catch
of his life; Abraham and Sarah sure had that Isaac....
'And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a
performance of those things which were told her from the Lord' Luke 1:45
Have a blessed and productive day.
